Several blogs posted today about the arrival of Wubi, a Ubuntu installer for Windows.

Here is a quote from the Wubi Website:

“Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you.”

I think it is a great way to introduce Ubuntu to Windows users who still have cold feet about installing a second O.S. The Wubi method evades a major hurdle for every Linux newbie, which is setting up a separate partition. And while you install it within windows, it does not mean that Ubuntu operates within Windows. Ubuntu runs as an separate O.S that you can select in the boot menu right after restarting your computer.

I have been looking for a portable device that allows me to surf the internet at public places with wifi hotspots. I really like the iPhone and Nokia N95, but i don’t really need a cellphone and i find them to be too expensive. The concept of Open Moko, an open source “iPhone”, is really interesting but i’m not sure if they will be able soon to come up with a product that is usable for the masses. And again it is most of all a phone. What i really want is a very small pc for an affordable price. It seems that Asus has came up with just that.

Asus released the Eee PC, a tiny notebook pc that nearly fulfills all my wishes. It is only 9″ wide (the screen is 7″) it weighs less than a kilo and it does everything you could ever want. It has an internet browser, E-mail client, Skype, Open Office and even a webcam. The O.S. is Linux and instead of a harddrive the Eee PC runs on Flash memory. Best of all, it is cheap. You can get your own Eee PC for only 300 Euro’s.

The three E’s stand for Easy to learn, Easy to work Easy to play. And it is. You turn it on and in less than half a minute you have a desktop in front of you that is super user friendly. All the main purposes like the internet, office and games are separated by tabs and the icons symbolizes perfectly what the applications do. If i ever can get my my mom on the internet, this would be the computer i would buy for her. The only thing that i’m not sure of is if the language used on the Eee PC’s in the Netherlands is Dutch.

Even if it isn’t small enough to fit into my pocket, i’m really tempted to get one. And maybe one for my mother. The Eee PC is perfect for the absolute beginner or people like me who want to be online whenever they can.
