I shouldn’t have been surprised that this happened. But i was. So much for trying to stay positive.
Without PvdA’s support, the initiative from the left-wing opposition for a referendum will not make it through Parliament. “
The interesting thing is that the PVDA (the Dutch labour party) was the only party in the last referendum where the politicians voted differently (yes) about the European constitution than the majority of its voters (no). For those who forgot what happened back in 2005, the no voters won. After that, the constitution went through some real and some cosmetic changes and was officially degraded to a regular treaty.
Afraid of losing votes to the Socialist Party, PVDA promised to support a referendum for the new treaty in the last elections. After getting the votes, they dropped that promise during the formation of the latest government. They also gave up on the promise of investigating the Dutch “political support” of the invasion of Iraq. It is not clear what the party is getting for it in exchange. What is clear, is that there will not be a referendum about the new European treaty.
It shows again that anything concerning the European Union can seldom be based on a solid democratic foundation. It also proves that the PVDA acts as left party, but when push comes to shove, seems to be governed by neo-liberal Eurocrats .
What happens to a political party where the top does the exact opposite of what the majority of its voters wants? Those parties dwindle and die. Bye PVDA! If you don’t trust your own voters, you don’t deserve their support.
