Fighting the beast

I have been facing a sort of a moral dilemma in the past week. It was presented to me by Beetle.

“My sister is involved in organizing and walking in a melanoma walk. Her personal goal is $1,000, I am not sure what she has raised so far but if anyone can donate, please do so here. Also if you could link this on your blogs, journals or wherever. Whatever you can do to spread the word. It doesn’t matter how much you give or if you give at all, just spread the word.”

I like and respect Beetle as much you can like and respect anyone who you only know through the internet. But i wasn’t too happy with his call for support. Not that i’m too greedy to donate money for a good cause. But someone who is writing a good blog suddenly implying me to put my money where my socialist mouth is, that is a different thing. I would feel like a total hypocrite if just i just “spread the word”. My financial situation leaves a lot to be desired, but i can miss a little bit if i have to. I just wasn’t sure if i had to this time.

In the end i decided i had. Melanoma is an extremely aggressive form of cancer. It is also a kind of cancer that makes no sense. You might never have smoked a single cigarette, never drank a drop of alcohol and always ate your vegetables, this one does not care. There hasn’t been found a good treatment for this form of cancer. And the search for that treatment is where the money that you donate to Beetle’s sister is going to.

So i’m in. It might save someones life. Hell, it might save my own life. But if not, there is no reason to let any form of cancer get it’s way without a fight. So do whatever you want with i just said. At least think about it.
