The Dutch public broadcasting scene has a lot of religious branches. Every world religion has its own broadcasting organization that gets airtime on both television and radio. As long as they don’t do their religious mumbo jumbo, i enjoy a lot of their programs. The catholics and protestants have great news programs and they air a lot of good British detective series. The muslims have a great talkshow that i like to watch. I’m not too familiar with the hindu’s, buddhists and jews. I think their airtime is cramped together on sunday mornings. I sleep on sunday mornings.
The born again christians are also doing very well. As long as they don’t get high on Jesus, they are able to deliver good programs. For example, they air David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals. David Attenborough is a biologist and he does not care much for the idea that some desert deity was fiddling around with his magic play-doh and created the heavens, the earth and the rest. David is convinced that evolution is the theory that answers all questions regarding biology. Even Dutch born again christians go for the desert deity play-doh theory and it turns out that that poses a problem.
What do you do when you air a series that presents a view you can’t support? Well, you can censor it. Edit out all the stuff you don’t like and if there is an episode that has too much stuff that needs editing, then you simply skip the whole thing.
Got a problem with that? Don’t watch the show!
Apart from being pissed off that my fundamentalist christian fellow countrymen are censoring with my tax money, i just have to wonder if they couldn’t find an alternative show that suited their needs and views. Or create one themselves. Wouldn’t it be great if they could get a famous preacher who would go into the jungle to show us the wonders of creation?
On safari with Ted Haggart. Man, i would not skip a single episode!
