I haven’t been writing for quite some time, while there was more than enough to write about. For example:
Playmates for Uruzgan?
Annemarie Jorritsma (former minister of transportation, current mayor of Almere) thinks that it is a great idea to sent prostitutes along with the soldiers when they go on a military mission abroad. I suspect that the sexual harassments (by male sailors on the female colleagues) on a marine ship and the major incident in a discotheque in Norway (Dutch marines beating up the local men and women, have something to do with Jorritsma’s thought-fart.
To me prostitution is like anarchy, perfect concepts in a perfect world. In this imperfect world, anarchy leads to misuse of power; prostitution is the result of misuse of power.
And why only prostitutes for heterosexual men? What about women, or gays? Maybe the best solution would be to enable the soldiers to have quality time with their better halves for at least one day in four weeks. And if that doesn’t helps, you can always go to that little trailer at the back of the camp, where Annemarie Jorritsma will give her very best just to boost your morale.
Shut up Al
Gore was in The Netherlands to promote his movie “An Inconvenient Truth“. Gore has been the second man in power in the worlds most powerful government for eight long years. Does anyone remember the stand of the Clinton administration regarding the Kyoto treaty? I do and that is why Gore’s crusade for the climate is seriously pissing me off.
I don’t need men like Gore reminding me that this world is going to shambles because mankind is doing everything to kill the environment it is depending on. I need men like Gore to make a difference when they are in the position to do so. If the Gore’s really have a sense of humor, then Tipper should make the same sort of movie about free speech.
Free speech
The Worldwide Press Freedom Index 2006 revealed some interesting information. First place is shared by Finland, Ireland, Iceland and the Netherlands. Romania was on the 70th spot in 2004 and now the country climbed up to the 58th place.
The United States can be found on place 53, together with Botswana, Croatia and Tonga. In 2004, the U.S. were on the 22nd place. As a journalist, you can’t be happy about that, even if you are working for Fox News.

your shut up al gore section is fantastic, dollev. that is exactly what i’ve been telling people, specifically my students, and hardly anyone is willing to listen. the hypocrisy of gore is bad enough, but the patronizing stench of his delivery is unbearable. he did nothing…NOTHING…good for the environment, and as his cousin gore vidal has pointed out on gnn he has even profited from the wholesale destruction of parts of america’s parks.
gore makes me ill.
Check out this transcript from the News Hour, around the 2000 election.

Looks to me like there was good and bad in his record.
“KATIE McGINTY: We have completed with the vice president’s leadership more than three times the number of Superfund cleanups than any of the previous administrations, so the record is very strong. However, the administration has also put on the table time and time again over the last seven years, important new legislation that would update the Superfund program, that would improve it. And at every turn, the majority in the Congress has failed to pass that legislation.”
Increasing the number of superfund sites cleaned up seems a far cry from, “NOTHING”. When you argue in absolutes it doesn’t take much effort to undercut what you have to say.
With a Republican congress the Clinton/Gore administration hardly ruled with a free hand. I’m no big fan of Clinton’s. I like Gore alright. But when some one is trying to spread an important message and is successful at doing so, (I’ve seen Gore featured on countless radio and television shows talking about global warming), I say forget the personality and support the message. Hell, if Dick Cheney’e black heart suddenly flopped over and he wanted to support environmental protection, I couldn’t be happier.
If you give me a dollar, whether you’re a liar or a saint, it’s still a dollar.
It remains to be seen if that dollar was a gift in the first place.
The rumours that Gore might be a part of the next presidential elections in 2008 are getting stronger and stronger. Gore’s current crusade against global warming might have doing something with getting him back on the map before 2008. It would certainly help to reel in those people who voted Green Party in 2000.
When that happens, it will be interesting to see from which sponsors he is accepting the money. I’m not too sure that the green banner he is flying right now, won’t be folded right after a succesful presidential campaign, sponsored by his wheeling and dealing buddies.
But with Al’s crusade against global warming and Tipper’s crusade with the PMRC against foul mouthed rock & roll, we might all be in for something new.
Green conservatism!
