The best news show ever celebrates

nos-journaal.jpgTaxes are a wonderful thing, especially when they are spent on things that are for the good of the whole society. A very good example of that is the Dutch public news show the NOS Journaal.

Yesterday they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a bang: 9 hours of television about the history of the NOS journaal that showed the most important news that was broadcasted in those fifty years and there were also interviews with all the great anchormen and anchorladies that made the show what it was and still is: highly informative, non-opiniated but still deeply rooted in Dutch society and it’s culture. Another treat was that all these people did one last 9 minute bulletin about the news of today.

But that was not all. Later in the evening there was a 1.5 hour documentary about this news institute and this time it was more about how they changed their attitude towards news and the choice what to cover or not to cover.

I was so happy that didn’t have to work today, because this was brilliant television. It was lovely to get 50 years of history presented on a golden platter and see how those events changed the world and especially the culture and mindset of the Dutch.

Saturday we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Jeugdjournaal, a news show for kids. How many countries have a daily news bulletin for children?

People who know me, know that i seldom brag about stuff that comes from my country. But 10.5 hours of watching television today made me really proud to be Dutch. I have seen many other news shows from the U.K and the U.S, but not one of them has been able to present me the “who, when, how and why” of daily news as the people of the NOS Journaal. So i wish them a happy anniversary and the best of luck in the next 50 years.
