“Why is it so hard for people to copy to their own website, instead of just referring to mine and stealing my bandwidth in the progress?
“
Never comment on a post when you are pretty irritated and especially when you are eating french fries at the same time. It screws up your grammar.
What was i rambling about?
Bandwidth. The problem is that more and more people are linking to this blog. Or to be more precise, the pictures on this blog.
The last few weeks it is getting totally ridiculous. There are days that i lose 50 mb of bandwidth a day, just because people are too lazy or too greedy to simply download the picture they want to use and upload it to their own server.
A bigger problem than the loss of bandwidth, is the way it screws up my statistics. I love checking the stats, but it is getting harder and harder to read them when they are contaminated by people who are visiting other websites that link to pictures that are residing at dollev.com.
Stop doing that! Bandwidth and web space is affordable for everyone who can pay for connection to the internet.
This afternoon i decided i had enough and i posted the aforementioned comment, on a wbsite that linked to the Frau Bush picture.
And this was the reply of the owner of the website:
” Sorry, Dollev. I was not on my home computer when I searched Google Images for something appropriate to this post. I just uploaded it to Blogger so that it won’t use your bandwidth. Thanks for the heads-up.
”
That’s just grand. Now i finally get totally overboard about something, i get this very friendly and understanding reply. Now i’m the one feeling guilty.
You can find the website here by the way. It is worth reading too.

Hiya Dolf! I have run into that problem a bunch of times!! I have found some ways around it. My favorite one is to replace the image if they ignore my repeated requests to remove it. I usually replace it with something VERY nasty:) Recently, on my Unix server, I have been using a function of the cpanel software to prevent hotlinking. Search for hotlinking remedies, there are many out there. Or, use a image hosting service like flickr.com.
Cheers!
~Paul
Luck has it that my webhost just updated my Cpanel. It now also has the hotlink feature. I enabled it and it seems to work.
Great tip Paul, thanks!
What the hell is a cpanel?
Cpanel (control panel) allows you to monitor your website. You can also add e-mail adresses, accounts, restricted areas that require membership. Start a forum, a blog, a chatroom. It’s a pretty cool program.

Yeah, that will serve you well Dolf! Your cpanel should also have guestbook stuff and forums in it too, right? I could care less about that stuff but some of my customers really dig it. One customer loves the PHPNuke stuff and has created a couple sites with it. Glad my tip was of some value, I guess I can live another day, haha.
Jeff, see if the domino can hook ya up…
